April 12, 2024 — DENTON — WyLaina Polk, MLS, joined the SLIS faculty in January 2024 as a visiting lecturer. Polk, a 2003 graduate of the University of North Texas, has worked in public libraries as a children’s librarian, teen librarian, circulation supervisor, and manager.

She started her career in San Antonio and came to the Denton area in 2005. She was the first chair of the Texas Library Association (TLA) Maverick Committee, which is the reading list for graphic novels. She is interested in library programming, services to children and teens, children’s literature, and public libraries.

One of Polk’s favorite books is "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. It has been a yearly reading for Polk. A second favorite is "Parable of the Sower" by Octavia E. Butler. Polk often reflects on it as a book that is an uncomfortable experience but a necessary read.
