TWU Dietetic Internship Master’s Degree Program receives reaccreditation

TWU nutrition students

August 25, 2020 - HOUSTON - The TWU Dietetic Internship Master’s Degree Program in Houston was granted reaccreditation by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Reaccreditation is typically for seven years; however, the program was granted accreditation through 2028.

This highly competitive year-long internship, which focuses on medical nutrition therapy, is part of two master’s programs offered at TWU: the MS in Nutrition and the MS in Exercise and Sports Nutrition.

Participating in an accredited internship program is mandatory for any nutrition student who want to work as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

“Only students who successfully complete a minimum of 1,200 supervised practice hours through an accredited program such as ours are registration eligible for the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential,” said Houston Dietetic Internship Director Karen Moreland, M.S., R.D.N., L.D.

In order to receive the reaccreditation, Moreland first prepared a comprehensive self-study report addressing how the program fulfills all ACEND required competencies related to nutrition and dietetics practice. Next, a team from ACEND conducted an onsite visit, which included meetings with faculty, administrators, current and past interns, preceptors and the Advisory Board, as well as visits to several of the supervised practice sites.
