Recent DACA announcement

Dear University Community:

I was welcoming our Houston students, faculty, and staff back to campus this morning when the announcement of the ending of the Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals or DACA program was released.

I am sure many of you are wondering what this recent action means for our university and our students. First and foremost, I want our students and the entire university community to know that Texas Woman’s University remains committed to serve its students, regardless of national origin. While it is our responsibility to follow the law, we are working with national higher education organizations and our congressional representatives to ensure that all of our students have the opportunity to complete their education.

In addition, I want to remind our students of services available to them through our Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Outreach, and via TWU Student Legal Services. In addition, our Counseling and Psychological Services is always available for students who are in need of counseling services in a confidential and safe environment. The Division of Student Life has arranged to welcome national immigration educational rights speaker Dr. Alejandra Rincon to the Denton campus and also invited Proyecto Inmigrante Immigration Counseling Services back for another information session. Both dates were previously scheduled, but we are attempting to move the dates even earlier, in light of the recent news.

Finally, I want to assure our DACA students that we have no plans to change how we serve you at Texas Woman’s University. You can continue to rely on our support and commitment to excellence in your education. It is my hope that the U.S. Congress will answer the American Association of State Colleges and Universities call to action and pass legislation in the near future to address this issue. In the meantime, please know that you are a valuable part of the Texas Woman’s University community and our mission to educate students in an inclusive environment that embraces diversity.
