J. Dean Bishop Excellence in Teaching Award
Jimmy Dean Bishop, Professor Emeritus of the English, Speech, and Foreign Languages Department, passed away on July 15, 2020. By all accounts, he was much beloved by the department and TWU community. He began his career at TWU in 1968, received tenure in 1974, became a full professor in 1978 and retired in 1997. His academic work centered on British Fiction, Poetry, and Rhetorical Criticism with numerous contributions to edited collections, such as A Symposium in Rhetoric (1974), Retrospectives and Perspectives: A Symposium in Rhetoric (1978) and Rhetoric and Change (1982). He also headed up numerous study abroad trips to both England and France.
The J. Dean Bishop Excellence in Teaching Award was established upon Bishop’s retirement to recognize the outstanding teaching achievements of graduate students. The award was named after him because, as Dr. Alfred Litton commented, “Dean was not only beloved by our graduate students but he also epitomized the dedication and compassion one looks for in a great teacher. He was the model of a great professor who left a profound impression on his graduate students.”
