DENTON/DALLAS/HOUSTON — Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Neftali Gomez of Dallas as the new student regent for Texas Woman’s University. She will serve a one-year term expiring May 31, 2016.

Gomez says she was inspired to apply for the student regent post after hearing TWU Chancellor Carine M. Feyten speak at her Inauguration last November.

“I loved hearing Dr. Feyten’s new hopes and plans for TWU, and I thought, ‘I would like to be part of that change,’” Gomez said. “Therefore, I decided to apply to the one student-held leadership position that would give me a front row seat to all the developing action.”

Gomez, 20, is a junior on the TWU Denton campus majoring in business administration. She is a TWU Student Orientation Team Leader, a team leader for the TWU G-Force first-generation student mentorship group and was a resident assistant for University Housing from 2014-2015. She also is a Mary Bryan and Tom Reitch Scholar at TWU and has been recognized for academic achievement by being on both the Dean’s List and Chancellor’s List at TWU. A first-generation college student, Gomez graduated from the Magnet School for the Talented and Gifted in Dallas in 2013.

She will attend her first board meeting as the TWU student regent Aug. 13 at the TWU Denton campus.

“During my term, I hope to make the TWU student body more aware of the student regent position,” Gomez said. “My goal is for students to feel comfortable approaching me with their questions or suggestions that I can take back to the Board of Regents, thus making more students feel like their voice is being heard.”

Gomez is replacing TWU student regent Candace Henslee of Denton.

In 2005, Gov. Rick Perry signed legislation mandating that each public university board of regents include one student member. Student regents have the same powers and duties as the other members of the board, with the exceptions of voting and being counted to determine a quorum.
