Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA)
It’s the Law
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a matter of state law (Texas Education Code 52.3062) and compliance is mandatory for all students who wish to attend a Texas Public institution of higher education (as of fall 2003). The law requires all entering college students to be assessed for college readiness in reading, mathematics, and writing unless the student qualifies for an exemption. TSI status does not affect your admission to Texas Woman’s University.
About the TSI Assessment
The TSI Assessment (TSIA) is a three-part knowledge assessment covering the subjects of reading, mathematics, and writing. These tests are administered on a computer. The TSIA is an untimed test and can be quite lengthy. Please allot approximately 1.5-2 hours per section. Students attempting all three sections may be excused for a short lunch. Please consider packing a lunch or taking advantage of our on-campus dining options. If a student is unable to complete all sections of the exam, he/she may return within 14 days to complete the exam. The structure of the test is as follows:
TSI Math Test – There are approximately 20 multiple-choice questions on this test and 10 questions in each section of the diagnostic tests (if required). Subject matter includes: Intermediate Algebra and Functions; Geometry and Measurements; and Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability.
TSI Writing Test – This portion includes a 20 question multiple-choice assessment (10-12 questions on the diagnostic if required) and a 250 word essay. Subject matter includes: Essay Revision; Agreement; Sentence Structure; and Sentence Logic.
TSI Reading Test – There are approximately 24 questions on this test, and 10-12 questions per category on the diagnostic (if required). Subject matter includes: Literary Analysis; Main Idea and Supporting Details; Inferences in a Text or Texts; and Author’s Use of Language.
Know your TSI Status
Students can check their TSI status by logging into their Pioneer Portal. On "My Start Page" click the "Your Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Status" under the heading titled "Other Resources".
Before you take the TSI Assessment
Before taking the TSI Assessment, the student must participate in a mandatory Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA). The PAA is only an exercise to be completed and will not be scored. Students are required to take the PAA on their own, either at home or at school; students should spend less than 30 minutes on the PAA.
Upon completion of the PAA, the student will receive an emailed proof of completion receipt and will be eligible to register for the TSI Assessment. Students should bring a copy of the PAA receipt with them to the scheduled testing appointment.
