About the Initiative
The Texas Woman’s University Health and Wellbeing Initiative supports optimal wellness for students and employees by guiding collaborative initiatives. We deliver innovative programs, collaborate with academic and student life departments, and seek to connect the TWU community with the larger communities we live, work and play in.
Mission, Vision, Values
The mission of the Health and Wellbeing Initiative is to create and sustain a culture of wellbeing for TWU students and employees that ensures a lifetime of success and thriving. It is our vision to create a nationally-recognized wellbeing model that improves student lives, champions faculty and staff expertise, fosters collaboration, and enhances our institutional identity.

The Texas Woman’s University Health and Wellbeing Initiative is a Chancellor-led commitment to improving the lives of our students, employees and community members. Starting in 2015 Chancellor Feyten and members of her cabinet worked with Keeling and Associates to design the scope and purview of the initiative, in close alignment with the campus strategic plan. A national search was conducted with the inaugural director hired in the summer of 2017.
Why is the initiative important?
Colleges and universities have an emerging responsibility to help students develop skills that will allow them to be successful across their academic experience, through co-curricular opportunities and beyond college and into thriving careers. This means developing students who are both well-educated, and who are also resilient, thoughtful, engaged and have a sense of purpose. These students know their strengths and are self-directed in the pursuit of their own health, wellbeing and life goals.
Health and well-being initiatives that promote student success and retention are integral to the academic mission of Texas Woman’s University. By creating a collaborative initiative focused on positive lifestyles and holistic health, TWU hopes to:
- Improve student and employee health and well-being
- Enhance learning and academic success
- Promote student and employee retention, career satisfaction and sense of purpose
- Foster committed and engaged citizens with an awareness of social determinants of health
- Promote career and professional development leading to a lifetime of success
What is wellbeing?
There are many definitions of wellbeing. Some define wellness “as an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth.”

Health and well-being are capacities that enable people to thrive and reach their full potential.
This innovative approach is part of the University’s larger Strategic Plan, “Learn to Thrive,” and is one of the initial eight major initiatives that fall within the strategic imperatives and areas of distinction.
