Study Abroad Program

Pre-service Pioneras participate in an intensive Spanish language course in Costa Rica, with native Spanish speaking teachers; learn about the culture and the people of this country; and complete observations and volunteer work in a local elementary school. Simultaneously, Pre-service Pioneras complete this face-to-face coursework in Spanish to, among other objectives, draw conclusions on how they can preserve and support Spanish through dual language teaching in the U.S.

  • EDBE 3453-ESL Methods: This course deals with the techniques, methods, and strategies for the instruction and assessment of English Language Learners (ELLs).
  • EDBE 4453-Theories of Second Language Acquisition for ESL and Bilingual Teachers: This course examines theories and research in bilingualism and its influence on learning and instruction, including developmental characteristics of language acquisition, the relationship between bilingualism and cognition, and issues in assessment of bilingual children.
