Update on Feb. 22nd hazardous materials incident at TWU’s Graduate Research Building in Denton - 2/22/17 2:05 p.m.

At about 12:45 p.m. today at the Graduate Research Building on Texas Woman’s University’s Denton campus, there was a hazardous materials incident resulting in the evacuation of the building. There are no injuries from the incident. HAZMAT (Denton Fire Department) is on scene to ensure the building is safe. The GRB building is closed for the remainder of the day and evening. Oakland Street is closed until HAZMAT determines the building is safe.

Though the university still is gathering details, it is believed that an acid and a base accidentally were mixed during routine disposal of chemical waste by a graduate lab assistant. No one was in the room when the glass container containing the chemicals shattered, the size of which is estimated to be less than 2 liters. As a result of the shattering of the container, the building was evacuated and the TWU Police Department and Denton Fire Department were immediately called to the scene.

Further updates will be released once available.
