TWU fashion merchandising students win top prizes in scholarship competition

Texas Woman’s University fashion merchandising students Alaina Miller, Andrea Rodriguez and Ashlie Wilson took home the three top awards in the Digital Store Planning and Design category at the Fashion Group International 2017 Scholarship Competition. Fashion Group International is a global, non-profit professional organization with more than 5,000 fashion industry members.

Miller received first place and a $2,500 scholarship for her concept, “Your Local World,” a store where “every purchase has a purpose.” Her product line includes items merchandised from socially responsible brands, which are then marketed to locals who value the environment, charitable causes and community improvement.

Rodriguez received second place and a $1,500 scholarship for her children’s boutique, “MinnieMe.” Her concept features a friendly, playful atmosphere and fashion-forward children’s apparel and accessories. Wilson was awarded third place and a $500 scholarship for her mobile boutique concept, “Minty’s,” a store on wheels that sells fresh fashions with a vintage feel for women of all sizes.

The winning projects were created in conjunction with a TWU Fashion and Textiles course in retail product management. Throughout the semester, students developed store concepts, goals and objectives; analyzed target markets; and determined key factors for success. Digital renderings of each concept’s storefront, interior design and merchandise were created and entered into the competition, winning a total of $4,000 in scholarship awards.
