For these Pioneers, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was more than just a Monday off before the start of Spring 2016 classes.

Six Texas Woman’s University student groups participated in service projects around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex Monday to honor Dr. King’s service to the Civil Rights Movement. TWU’s chapter of Sigma Lambda Alpha sorority helped sort clothing at Dallas’ Austin Street Center to outfit the nearly 400 homeless individuals the Center supports, while students from TWU’s chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and Black Student Association put together resource bags at CitySquare AmeriCorps. In conjunction with Austin Street, CitySquare Americorps provides support services for the homeless population of Dallas.

TWU groups also helped out at Denton’s Monsignor King Outreach Center, doing groundwork and cleaning, participated in litter pickup with Keep Denton Beautiful, supported the MLK Day parade in Dallas and served at Fort Worth’s Samaritan House, which provides housing and resources for persons living with HIV/AIDS and other special needs. The Center for Student Development organized TWU’s Day of Service volunteer efforts.
