TWU gymnast Jones captures all-around and vault titles
TWU sophomore Schyler Jones
Schyler Jones carried two individual titles home to Denton from the 2016 Midwest Independent Conference Championships in Cape Girardeau, Mo., including the conference’s all-around championship.
“Schyler had an incredible night,” TWU Gymnastics coach Lisa Bowerman said. “[Jones] was spectacular on every event. I am so proud of her and excited that she won vault and all-around.”
Jones, a Denton native, posted a 39.075 combined score in four events: vault, uneven bars, beam and floor exercise to capture the all-around title. Her 9.825 on the vault was tied for the cleanest run in the conference, netting the sophomore her second title of the night.
TWU posted a 193.325 and finished third out of six teams. Lindenwood repeated as conference champions in the team standings with a 194.925.
Fellow sophomore Alyssa Kelly placed second on the bars as well, with a score of 9.825.
“I am very proud of the way our team performed,” Bowerman said. “It was not a perfect meet, but we were able to pick it up after mistakes and avoid counting any falls. “Despite some of the scores not showing it, I do feel like it was another step forward for our team. We continue to improve and are looking forward to getting home and training together for national.”
The Pioneers’ postseason run will continue when the TWU competes at the USA Gymnastics National Championships, which will be held at Lindenwood University April 8-10. TWU is also the host institution for the NCAA National Championships, which will be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center April 15-16.
