Abigail Tilton named new College of Arts and Sciences dean
Abigail Tilton, Ph.D., brings an extensive service and administrative background to her role as the new dean of the Texas Woman’s University College of Arts and Sciences.
It’s a familiar role for Tilton, who had served as the college’s interim dean since January.
“I am thrilled and honored to be selected to lead the College of Arts and Sciences at such an exciting time for TWU,” Tilton said. “As we participate in the strategic planning process to build a strong future for the university, the opportunity to work with faculty, staff and students in determining how that plan will advance our college is a dream come true.”
Prior to serving as interim dean, Tilton was the associate dean of the college for two years. Robert Neely, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs at TWU, said Tilton “developed a deep understanding of all facets of the college and its varied programs” during this time.
“I have every confidence that Dr. Tilton will provide dynamic leadership to the college and foster a culture of innovation and excellence in this critically important position,” Neely added.
The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest of TWU’s four colleges and includes programs in the humanities, sciences, social sciences, fashion and textiles and general studies, as well as the School of the Arts.
Tilton said the diversity of the college programs is what excited her most about her leadership role. She also wants to support faculty development and strengthen the new faculty mentor program, and is committed to TWU-Women in Higher Education, an organization dedicated to developing women as leaders in higher education.
Tilton previously served as program director of the university’s department of sociology and social work. Before joining TWU, Tilton served as executive director of AIDS Services of North Texas, Inc., was the Skilled Nursing Unit program manager at Dallas Rehabilitation Hospital and was a social worker for HCA-Lewisville Memorial Hospital.
