Profile

In junior high school Michelle Flowers decided to play the trombone in order to avoid her school’s mandatory year in choir. This decision proved to have an enormous impact on her life and has lead to a myriad of rewarding experiences and performing opportunities across the country and around the world. Throughout the course of her career thus far she has had the privilege of performing with many talented musicians and ensembles including the Utah Symphony, Jorgen van Rijen, and Michael Martin Murphy as well as performing at the Janacek International Festival, the Collegiate Band Directors National Association Conference, the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival, the Raphael Mendez Institute, the NCAA basketball tournament, and with the James Christy Cole Circus.  She has been a guest artist at Southwestern Assemblies of God University, Brigham Young University, and the Lyceum Philharmonic.  Currently, Michelle maintains an active freelance career in the Dallas/Fort Worth area as a performer and educator. 

In addition to performing, Michelle is a staff writer for Film Score Monthly Online Journal where she writes a monthly column called “Gold Rush” which examines all topics related to the film scores of the Golden Age of Hollywood and the composers who developed the film score genre.  She is also currently researching self-handicapping among the musician population and whether such psychological protective behaviors help or hinder students in their musical development.

Michelle graduated cum laude and with university honors from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s of music degree in trombone performance.  She has a master’s of music degree in trombone performance and a doctorate of musical arts degree in trombone performance from the University of North Texas with related fields in ethnomusicology and music and medicine.  She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key International Honour Society, the International Trombone Association, and the Texas Music Educators Association.  Her primary instructors are Vern Kagarice, Tony Baker, Daniel Bachelder, Will Kimball, Rusty McKinney, Larry Zalkind, and Jan Kagarice.

A native of Orem, Utah, Michelle loves all things involving the mountains and being outdoors. When not performing or researching she can be most often be found running with her twin golden retrievers, Watson and Sundance, hiking, rock climbing, or watching Doctor Who.
