Starting piano at a young age, Chen was soon attending classes at the school for the musically gifted and later went to study in Austria and Germany. She studied with Professor Sebastian Benda in Graz, Austria, and later with Professor Thomas Duis at the University of Music in Saarland, Saarbrücken, Germany, where she earned a Master of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy and the prestigious Artist Diploma. Chen studied with Dr. Richard Shuster while completing the Master of Arts in Music degree in piano performance at Texas Woman's University. She has also participated in masterclasses and summer music festivals, studying under Edith Picht-Axenfeld, Malcolm Bilson, György Sebök and John Perry.

While studying in Europe, Chen was the staff accompanist for various instrumental classes and has performed numerous solo and chamber music recitals. She also performed as featured soloist with Orchestra of the University of Music in Graz, Austria and Homburger Chamber Orchestra, Germany. Before moving to Texas, she was on faculty at Musikschule Obertshause, Germany where she taught piano preparatory classes to school age children.
