The Wind Symphony is the premier wind and percussion ensemble in the Department of Music and Drama at TWU. This select ensemble is comprised of the finest wind and percussion instrumentalists on campus, and it is dedicated to the study and performance of the highest quality of literature for the wind band medium. This group performs two to three times per semester and participates in an annual spring recruiting tour. The Wind Symphony rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4:00 pm in Margo Jones Performance Hall with sectionals on Fridays from 9:30-11:00 am. Membership in the TWU Wind Symphony is open to all students, regardless of major, upon audition. ALL Music Majors are REQUIRED to audition. Auditions for the 2018-2019 Academic Year will be Thursday and Friday, August 23 and 24, 2018. Audition excerpts and signups will be available on the website on Wednesday, August 1, 2018.
The University Band, one of our newest ensembles to campus, is designed specifically for the non-major and is open to all students, regardless of major. This group performs one to two times per semester and it rehearses on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30-4:00 pm in Margo Jones Performance Hall. No audition is required for participation. All TWU students are invited to continue their music-making in this musically rewarding environment.
Pioneer Pep Band
The Pioneer Pep Band is a select group of 30 students that provides musical entertainment for TWU Pioneer volleyball and basketball games as well as a select number of other performances. Membership is open to all TWU students upon audition. Auditions for the 2018-2019 Pioneer Pep Band will be Friday, August 31, 2018. Audition material and signups will be available on the website on Wednesday, August 1, 2018.
The TWU Jazz Ensemble is a traditional big band ensemble that performs a great mixture of jazz standards plus newer works for the jazz idiom. This group performs one to two times per semester, including community performances such as the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival. The Jazz Ensemble rehearses on Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:30-1:50 p.m. in Margo Jones Performance Hall. Membership in the Jazz Ensemble is open to all TWU students, regardless of major, upon audition. Auditions for the 2018-2019 Academic Year will be held the week of August 27, 2018. Audition material and signups will be available on the website on Wednesday, August 1, 2018.
The TWU Chamber Orchestra performs both chamber music and orchestral literature. Performances feature a variety of repertoire, from Baroque to modern musical periods. The TWU Flute Choir has been selected to perform a showcase concert at the 45th annual National Flute Association convention in Minneapolis this August. Their program will include the world premiere of their commissioned work Symphony for Flutes by Lawrence Ink. Dr. Youngblood will also conduct the 10,000 Lakes Flute Orchestra which will open the convention. The award-winning TWU Flute Choir performs a varied repertoire of original compositions and transcriptions ranging from Bach to jazz. Non-music majors are welcome to audition. The TWU Guitar Ensemble is a select ensemble that plays literature drawn from the major periods of music. The guitar ensemble often performs with other instrumentalists, and has concerts both on campus and in the community. Non-music majors are welcome to audition.
