Debbie Dacus, MA, MT-BC, resides in Fort Worth, Texas and has maintained a private music therapy practice, specializing in children and adolescents with IDD (intellectual and developmental disabilities) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), since her graduation from TWU (B.S. in Music Therapy-cum laude) in 1987. In addition to individual music therapy services, Ms. Dacus provides consultative services to school districts and agencies in and around Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. She is a popular speaker for workshops and in-services. Debbie has presented at professional conferences on various topics pertaining to music therapy interventions for children with IDD and ASD, the “nuts and bolts” of setting up a private practice, the creation of effective music therapy strategies, and successful collaboration and inclusion in the public school system. For 20 years, Ms. Dacus contracted with Partners in Therapy, LLP, a multi-treatment rehabilitation clinic, serving clients with injuries and disabilities in the DFW area. She is the host of her own show called Music Therapy with Debbie Dacus on The Autism Channel, a streaming channel available on Roku.
As a passionate advocate of music therapy, Debbie is a member of the Music Therapy Government Task Force for the state of Texas. Additionally, she is representing the Southwestern Region of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) as an appointee on the Assembly of Delegates.
Ms. Dacus was the recipient of the Harmony Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice from the Southwestern Region of AMTA in 2008.
Debbie has published several music therapy resources pertaining to the acquisition of social skills for those with autism spectrum disorders. Ms. Dacus acted as a temporary adjunct music therapy faculty member at TWU in the Spring of 2011. She taught a number of courses as a graduate assistant in the music therapy department while pursuing her Master’s degree. Ms. Dacus received her Master’s of Arts degree (member of Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Lambda honor societies) in Music Therapy from TWU in May 2014.
Ms. Dacus sang professionally, touring across the United States, for over 20 years. In 2004, she was the featured artist at Concert in the Gardens with the Fort Worth Symphony Swing Orchestra in Fort Worth, Texas. For 10 years, Debbie enjoyed acting roles on many of the DFW area’s live theatre stages, including, Stage West, Casa Manana, Circle Theatre, and Jubilee Theatre. Ms. Dacus was twice the recipient of the Best Supporting Actress Award from Stage West in Fort Worth, Texas.
Ms. Dacus has enjoyed sharing her practical therapeutic experiences with countless music therapy practicum students. And she has acted as an internship clinical supervisor or clinical director for 15 music therapy interns.
Debbie is married to Brent, a professional drummer.
