Women for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Camp

7 young girls work on a W4STEM team project

June 18-23, 2017 - Texas Woman’s University

W4STEM Camp is a residential summer camp on the TWU Denton campus for 40 young women currently in grades 6 - 8. The camp will emphasize hands-on STEM activities in the areas of anatomy and physiology, forensic science, microbiology and mathematics. In addition to classes, the camp introduces the girls to women who have already established themselves in science and mathematics careers. The female speakers will address a variety of topics, including the education necessary to pursue STEM careers; the job experiences leading to the jobs they hold; the rewards and challenges of STEM careers; and the future of their fields. Campers will have an opportunity to ask questions and explore each career through the eyes of a professional. Download our W4STEM Camp flyer (.pdf).

Description of Classes

Morning Choices

Anatomy and Physiology

Participants will gain an understanding of body composition through the comparative dissection of a series of preserved animals. Experiments and investigations surrounding the digestive, respiratory, circulatory systems and other exciting areas will be performed.

Forensic Science

Forensic scientists collect and analyze evidence in order to answer legal questions. Camp participants will examine, evaluate and explain physical evidence using pathology, toxicology, physical anthropology, serology, microbiology and genetics. Hands-on experiments and the reenactment of crimes will aid in this interactive study of forensic science.

Afternoon Choices

Participants will learn how mathematics and tablet technology can work together. Lessons include a variety of topics, including verifying that a staircase and wheelchair ramp slope will meet legal standards, using motion sensors and robots to graph movement of students, and using objects to plot distance versus time graphs before analyzing the graphs.

Microbiology is the study of tiny organisms that are too small to be seen without a microscope. Participants will explore the basic principles and applications of microbiology, including introductory microscope techniques, microscope slide preparation, basic culture principles and a survey of microbial organisms. Each student will create a microscope slide and take pictures of their very own microbes!
