Center for First-Generation Students

What does it mean to be a first-generation Pioneer? First-generation (or first-gen) college students are students whose parents or guardians have not completed a bachelor’s degree. Over 50% of TWU students are first-generation college students. 

The Center for First-Generation Students is dedicated to helping First-Gen Pioneers navigate the higher education system. It is our goal is to foster a sense of community and inclusion for all students. We provide a wide range of activities and events that promote community building and offer various services and programs. We aim to build collaborative relationships that enhance students' learning and engagement opportunities and enrich their co-curricular experiences to promote student success.

Mission Statement

The Center for First-Generation Students welcomes students from all backgrounds in its commitment to building inclusive communities within the TWU student body.  To foster a sense of belonging within the campus community, the Center will engage in efforts to celebrate the culture, identities, heritage, and history of TWU students.  The Center will also focus on creating supportive experiences for first-generation students to higher education to improve their retention and the successful obtainment of a TWU degree.

First-Generation Graduation Reception, April 19

We want to help you celebrate your accomplishments! CBFGS will host our inaugural First-Generation Graduation Reception, on Friday, April 19, at 6 p.m. The event will take place in the Student Union at Hubbard Hall, Southwest Ballroom, and first-generation graduating students in attendance will receive a stole to be worn during graduation. 

To apply for a first-gen stole, complete our application before April 1. Quantities are limited, so keep in mind that completion of the application does not guarantee you will receive a stole. Notification will be sent via email during the first week of April.
