History & Government Mission

Consistent with the mission of TWU that emphasizes liberal arts and professional education, the mission of the Department of History & Government is to develop an understanding and appreciation of the disciplines of history and political science, their interdisciplinary connections to each other and to other fields of inquiry.

As the study of history, politics, law and government is inevitably multicultural, our programs provide opportunities to learn about diversity of experiences, including a global range of cultural issues that address the intersecting roles of race, class, ethnicity, religion and gender, combining strengths in political and legal analysis with attention to historical evolution that illustrates the complexities of decision-making, the forces producing historical change and a diversity of intellectual traditions.

Courses in our programs seek to develop the skills needed for critical and analytical thinking, evidence-based research, oral and written presentation and public leadership. Ultimately, our courses prepare graduates for active citizenship and success in graduate and professional education or in the careers of their choice.
