Mission Statement

The principal goal of the First-Year Composition Program at Texas Woman’s University is to prepare undergraduate students for the composing tasks they will encounter in their academic, professional, civic, and personal lives. FYC courses at TWU encourage students to develop and apply the principles of critical thinking and problem-solving; to recognize the significance of establishing an audience and purpose as well as selecting appropriate communication choices in their writing; to demonstrate confidence in utilizing writing processes through invention, organization, drafting, revision, editing, and presentation; to conduct thorough research and gain expertise in source analysis, synthesis, and documentation; and to compose effectively in a variety of genres and modes. The FYC program honors the diverse range of identities, languages, and life experiences students bring to our program and advocates for their rhetorical agency and engagement with multiple discourses.
