Group Therapy

What is group therapy?

  • Groups are offered on the Denton campus during the fall and spring semesters.
  • Groups provide a supportive and stimulating environment for personal development, relationship building, and communication skill improvement.
  • Groups are organized by topic, commonly including:
    • Assertiveness skills
    • Personal growth
    • Overcoming dysfunctional family dynamics
    • Trauma recovery
    • Healthy relationships
  • Groups range in size from 5 to 15 clients and are led by a trained mental health professional.

Who is eligible for group therapy?

  • Students are eligible for unlimited group therapy when they are actively taking classes.
  • Students may attend group therapy sessions while participating in individual or couples therapy.
  • Depending upon the nature of your concerns, you may be referred to individual therapy or another agency to ensure you receive the care warranted.

What is the cost for services?

  • Fees for services are already included in students’ previously paid fees. No additional charges are incurred.

How do I know if I could benefit from group therapy?

  • Do you struggle with feeling alone in your problems?
  • Do you like to encourage others while also feeling supported?
  • Do you believe you can learn and grow based on others’ experiences?
  • Have you worked on some of your issues in previous therapy, or with friends and family, and now feel ready to work on them with others?
  • Could you use some practice improving your communication skills, social confidence, or trust?
  • Remember, most people, regardless of how serious their concerns are, can benefit from a supportive group environment.

How do I begin?

  • Call or stop by the Denton CAPS to place your name on the group's referral list.
  • The Group Coordinator will contact you to schedule a group intake appointment.
  • Arrive 30 minutes prior to your group intake appointment to complete intake paperwork.
  • In the 30-minute group intake appointment, you and a therapist will begin to explore the nature of your concerns and goals.
  • You and the therapist will collaboratively determine which resources available at the CAPS, (or another agency), are best suited to address your needs.
  • Ongoing services are scheduled by appointment at the conclusion of the intake appointment.
