Dr. Therese Bevers
Therese (Terry) Bartholomew Bevers, M.D., FAACP, graduated Magna Cum Laude, from Texas Woman’s University in 1981 with degrees in Chemistry and Biology and completed postgraduate training in analytical chemistry at TWU under Dr. Carlton Wendel. She received her M. D. from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas and completed a Family Practice Residency there with Dr. J. J. Gaspard. Her current primary academic appointment is Professor, Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention, division of OVP, Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. She also holds an administrative appointment as medical director of the Cancer Prevention Center and Prevention Outreach programs at MD Anderson. In her role as medical director, Dr. Bevers has overseen the growth and program development of the Cancer Prevention Center, the first comprehensive clinical cancer prevention service program in the country, since its opening in 1996.
The list of research grants and contracts for Dr. Bevers fills many pages. Her clinical and research interests are in centered in the area of breast cancer prevention, screening and diagnoses. Just a few of the most recent activities, honors and awards include serving on the Advisory Committee for the Center for Energy Balance in Cancer Prevention and Survivorship, being a founding member of the Center for Global Cancer Early Detection and a frequent judge of research posters for medical trainees. She has been listed on U.S. News and World Report America’s Top Doctor list for a number of years, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the Faculty Achievement Award in Cancer Prevention from M. D. Anderson. Several women’s organizations have recognized Dr. Bevers’ work in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer such as the Women’s Fund and The Texas Medical Center Women’s Health Network who awarded her the Kathryn S. Stream Award for Excellence in Women’s Health.
Dr. Bevers is certified by the American Board of Family Practice and is a member of many professional organizations including the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Breast Disease, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Society of Preventive Oncology. In Texas she holds memberships and had held leadership positions in the Texas Academy of Family Physicians and the Texas Medical Association. She was appointed to the Texas Woman’s University Board of Regents from 2001-2007 having been Chair the last two year term.
The American Cancer Society has been a focus for Dr. Bevers’ extensive volunteer work. She has served as President of the Executive Board for the Houston Metro Area and on numerous committees for the Texas Division. She is a frequent presenter at Houston area community groups and has been interviewed extensively for magazines, on radio and television.
She serves with her church and in mission efforts and for fun and relaxation, Dr. Bevers enjoys the hiking and skiing and being in the mountains.
