About the Exercise and Sports Nutrition Clinic

The purpose of the Wellness and Sport Evaluation Program is to provide health and fitness assessments for the Denton community. The program is designed to offer both health-related information and sport performance-related information. Revenues generated from the evaluations will be used to continue the evaluation program and to support researchers and students in their research endeavors at the Institute for Women’s Health.

All fitness testing will be performed at the Institute for Women’s Health Exercise and Sports Nutrition Clinic. Testing will be performed by graduate students from the Exercise and Sports Nutrition Master’s program. Students will use the program to develop skills and techniques, while providing a valuable service to the community.

Wellness & Sport Packages***

Weight-Management Program** $295
The weight-loss program will involve the Wellness Package for initial assessments, goal setting, and weekly meetings with professional staff for 12 sessions. Follow-up assessments will be included.

Wellness Package ** $100
Individuals will be provided with information regarding their current fitness level and risk profile for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.  This information can be used to design an appropriate nutrition and/or exercise program or to monitor the progress of a current nutrition/exercise program. Assessments Include: Cardiorespiratory fitness-Resting metabolic rate-Nutrition assessment-Muscular fitness-Body composition assessment-Blood glucose and lipid panel

Sports Package $125
Athletes at any level can use the information collected from the sport evaluation to build a physical profile or benchmark. Results from the sport evaluation will be compared to sport-specific norms and standards to identify strengths and weaknesses.  In addition, information provided from the battery of tests can help athletes determine the effectiveness of their current training program. Assessments Include: Cardiorespiratory fitness + Lactate threshold, -Nutrition assessment, -Body composition assessment, -Anaerobic power and capacity, -Muscular fitness

Individual Services***

Cardiorespiratory fitness* $85
The assessment of cardiorespiratory fitness will involve a graded exercise test on a treadmill or cycle ergometer to determine peak or maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). VO2max is considered the “gold standard” for the determination of fitness level. In addition, the cardiorespiratory fitness test will include the evaluation of resting and exercise electrocardiogram (ECG), heart rate, and blood pressure. Results from the cardiorespiratory test will include VO2max, ventilatory threshold, and lactate threshold (additional cost of $30).

Resting metabolic rate $50
The measurement of resting metabolic rate will involve resting in the supine position for one half hour. During the test, metabolic gases will be measured to determine the number of calories expended while at rest. Results from the resting metabolic rate evaluation are useful in determining caloric intake for nutrition evaluations.

Nutrition evaluation $75-100
The nutrition evaluation will involve the completion of a food frequency questionnaire and/or three day dietary record. A graduate student in the Exercise and Sports Nutrition program will provide a one-on-one nutritional consultation. All consultations will be supervised by a Registered Dietitian. Analyses will include total caloric, macronutrient, and micronutrient consumption. An update of current dietary recommendations will also be provided.

Body composition $25
The body composition assessment will involve the measurement of skinfold thickness at three to seven different body sites. In addition, waist and hip circumference measurements will be assessed. Results from the body composition assessment will include the percentage of body fat, fat mass, fat-free mass, waist-to-hip-ratio, and waist circumference. These measures are important in determining risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Blood glucose and lipid panel $30
Fasting blood will be collected and analyzed for glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol concentrations. The information collected will assist in determining the current risk for coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Bone density & body composition evaluation $100
Bone density and body composition will be evaluated by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan. Results from the test will include percent body fat, fat mass and lean body mass, and total body bone density. Physician referral is required for DXA scans.

Anaerobic power and capacity $25
Anaerobic power and capacity will be assessed by a Wingate cycle ergometry test. Results from the test will include peak power, mean power or capacity, and a fatigue index.

Muscular fitness $15
The evaluation of muscular fitness will involve the assessment of muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. Physical challenges will include hand grip strength and push-up and curl-up endurance tests. Flexibility will be determined for the shoulder and lower-back.

Pulmonary function $15
Pulmonary function will be measured by exhaling through a spirometer. Results from the test will include lung capacity, efficiency, and risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

*  Physician clearance is required for exercise testing to be performed on men over the age of 45 and women over the age of 55.
**  Free to students of Texas Woman’s University.
***  Discount to faculty and staff of TWU, and students of University of North Texas, and North Central Texas College.
