Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a national holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebrated on the third Monday of January, this year it will be January 16, 2012. In commemoration of his legacy of activism and public service, TWU Volunteer Services encourages students, faculty and staff to make this holiday a day ON rather than a day OFF.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Parade and March

What: The parade assembly begins at Dallas City Hall plaza. Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and enjoy the parade as the participants march from Dallas City Hall to Fair Park. For details please visit the City of Dallas website. If you have questions regarding the Parade/March please call the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center at 214.670.8438.

Where: Dallas City Hall: 1500 Marilla Street, Dallas, TX

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Candle Lighting Ceremony at MLK Center

What: Candle lighting ceremeony and MLK kick off. Call for details

When: January 14, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center Gym: 2901 Pennsylvania Ave, Dallas, TX  75215

Cost: FREE

 

23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and March

What: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Garland, Texas branch will host its 23rd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and March.

When: January 14, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.

Where: Starts at Dairy Road @ Garden Drive (near Embree Park), Garland, Texas 75040

Cost: FREE

 

The 24th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Mass

What: St. Patrick Cathetral will host the 24th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Mass. Reverend Kevin w. Vann, JCD, DD Bishop, Diocese of Fort Worth & Reverend Chester Smith, Diocese of Indiaapolis will be the celebrants. Refreshments will be served following mass. For additional information contact Deacon Leonard Sanchez and Madeline Morris. 

When: January 15, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration

What: The celebration hosted in the city of Denton that offers fun and activites for all ages.

When: January 16, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Where: Martin Luther King Recreation Center: 1300 Wilson Street, Denton, TX  

Cost: FREE

 

4th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration & Student Arts Exhibition

What: The IHOBF - Dallas Fourth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebtration & Student Art Exhibition is a visual and performance arts exhibition that celebrates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Participating youth will use the words of Dr. King as an inspiration for creating pieces of visual or performance artwork that not only explore the manner in which his principles and philosophies continue to influence contemporary life. The program will include musical and oratory presentations by students, a guest speaker, and a live narrated musical tribute to Dr. King.

When: January 16, 2012 at 12:00 p.m.
