JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Visual Arts invites applications for Chair of the Department and Professor/Associate Professor of Visual Arts.  Primary responsibilities include:

•  Providing strong academic leadership for the Department of Visual Arts

•  Fulfilling the administrative roles and responsibilities of the department chair for Visual Arts

•  Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and mentoring graduate students

•  Advocating for the needs of the department in College and University forums

•  Representing the department in community, regional, national & international forums

•  Facilitating futures planning and assessment activities within the department

•  Contributing to the ongoing work of the School of the Arts and the College of Arts and Sciences

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful applicant will have an earned doctorate or M.F.A. in an area in the visual arts and have the teaching experience, scholarship, and service record worthy of a tenured appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor (professor preferred).  Candidates with proficiency in digital and alternative media are encouraged to apply. A strong record of scholarship (artistic work and/or research) and a demonstrated record of success in working with students, faculty, colleagues in various disciplines, alumni, and the community are essential.  Experience in higher education academic leadership and administration is preferred.

The department seeks an individual with a strong record of academic leadership who is committed to shared governance, building consensus and facilitating a collaborative working environment.  The position of department chair requires experience with undergraduate and graduate education in the visual arts and an understanding of issues impacting the arts in higher education, as well as current trends in the various fields of the visual arts.  The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to support and mentor the professional growth of faculty, staff and students; foster the continued development of a diverse department; and work with faculty to shape a progressive vision for the future of the department that respects a range of disciplinary perspectives.  Demonstrated interest in and experience with curricular innovation and fostering interdisciplinary work across the visual and performing arts are important qualities.   

DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION:

Currently, the Department of Visual Arts has seven full-time faculty, in addition to the chair, with approximately 200 undergraduate and 50 graduate majors. Four degrees are offered in Art: B.A., B.F.A., M.A., and M.F.A., with seven emphasis areas:  art education, art history, ceramics, graphic design, painting, photography, and sculpture.
