What is the Legacy program?
The Hazlewood Legacy program is a benefit granted under the Texas Hazlewood Act and is designed to allow Texas veterans to transfer their unused Hazlewood hours to their children. Unfortunately spouses of Texas veterans are not eligible for the Legacy program.

What is a VA benefit letter and how do I receive one?
The VA benefit letter (aka Hazlewood letter) is an official correspondence from the VA stating your education benefits status. The letter will usually state you have exhausted your benefits or you are no longer eligible to receive the Montgomery GI Bill.
You can request a letter from the Regional VA Office 1-888-442-4551

What are the requirements for the Legacy program?
In order to use the Hazlewood legacy benefits a child must met the following requirements:
1) Be a Texas resident.
2) Be the biological child, stepchild, adopted child, or claimed as a dependent in the current or previous tax year.
3) Be 25 years or younger on the first day of the semester or term.
4) Make satisfactory progress in a degree, certificate or continuing education program.
Please note if your GPA drops below a 2.0 you will not be eligible for the Hazlewood Legacy program. If you raise your GPA above a 2.0 you can then reapply for the Hazlewood Legacy program.

What does the Hazlewood Legacy program pay for?
The tuition waiver will cover the cost of all tuition fees and charges, including fees for correspondence courses, but excluding property deposit fees, student service fees and any fees or charges for books, lodging, board, or clothing. The Hazlewood Act is a tuition exemption program; there is no money awarded to the student. Depending on your type of courses and course load you should plan to pay $200 to $450 dollar per semester. You must make a payment by the scheduled payment deadline for each semester you are enrolled.

How long can I use my Hazlewood Legacy benefits?
The Hazlewood Act can be used up to a maximum of 150 attempted credit hours. A dependent cannot combine hours and use more than the allotted 150 hours.

I used the Hazlewood Act at another university. Do I need to fill another application?
Yes! State law requires all universities to maintain their own Hazlewood tuition exemption files. Each university is also required to obtain a written record of attempted Hazlewood hours from all previously attended institutions.

What is the deadline to apply for the Hazlewood Act?
You will need to submit your completed Hazlewood packet to TWU’s Veterans Program by the census date for the given term. If you do NOT submit the completed Hazlewood packet by the census date deadline you will not be awarded the tuition exemption. The census date can be found on the academic calendar at TWU’s website: http://www.twu.edu/academics

Can I track how many Hazlewood hours I have used?
Yes, the Texas Higher Education Board provides an online student database: Hazlewood Student Database.
