TWU’S DENTON CAMPUS TO HOST OPEN HOUSE
Texas Woman’s University will host an open house for prospective students
on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the TWU Denton campus.
Prospective students and their guests will have the opportunity to meet faculty
and students, participate in a campus tour and attend sessions on admissions,
financial aid, housing, student life, commuter information, study abroad and
more.
The open house begins at 8:30 a.m. in Hubbard Hall. Information sessions are scheduled until 2 p.m., and a light buffet lunch will be provided to prospective students with guests paying $5.50 for the meal. For more information, visit www.twu.edu and click on “Denton Open House,” or call 8-1-3014.

JOYCE ELAINE GRANT PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION SCHEDULED
The Fifth Annual Joyce Elaine Grant Photography Exhibition will be held Monday, Jan. 23 through Friday, Feb. 17 in the Texas Woman’s University Fine Arts Galleries. The work of Holly Mathews, last year’s solo exhibition winner, will be on display during the event.
Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and on weekends by appointment. An opening reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. For more information, contact the TWU Department of Visual Arts at 8-1-2530.
Mathews is an emerging artist from Chicago. Her work, titled “Cycles of Use,” addresses issues of American culture and iconography. It provides a collective view of how images are used and discarded, and in turn, how they take on new meaning.
The annual Joyce Elaine Grant Photography Exhibition provides a national venue for the presentation of artistic expression as seen through the eyes of the camera.
Blake Fitch, executive director of the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, Mass., will serve as juror for this year’s exhibition.
Proceeds from the exhibition will help fund the Joyce Elaine Grant Photography Exhibition and Endowment, which will provide scholarships for future graduate students in the TWU Department of Visual Arts. The exhibition and endowment were established in 2001 by a small group of TWU graduate students and are named in memory of the mother of TWU photography professor Susan kae Grant.

TWU HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE SELECTS FIVE
Four former Texas Woman’s University student-athletes and a former coach/administrator make up the 2006 Class of the TWU Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. The seventh class to be inducted includes: Paulette Burrhus (1965-69), multi-sport athlete in track & field, swimming, field hockey, volleyball, basketball, badminton and softball; Sylvia Longoria Rodriguez (1968-1972), track & field and cross country; Catherine Sellers (1971-75), track & field, cross country and softball; Sandra Souza (1973-78), track & field; and Dr. Ruth “Betsy” Tandy (1968-95), tennis and bowling coach and administrator.
The inaugural class of six was inducted in 1994 ; currently, 24 members are in the Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony will be held Friday, April 21, as part of Homecoming weekend. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Hubbard Hall. Ticket information will be announced.

TWU STAFF SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
Applications for the Spring 2006 Staff Scholarships are being accepted. To be
eligible, applicants must: be a full- or part-time permanent TWU employee; have
been employed at least three consecutive months by the start of the spring 2006
semester; and be a student in good standing if previously enrolled at TWU. New
students must meet normal admission standards and should submit an application
with this request, if one has not already been submitted.
The scholarship will pay $250 toward one three-hour course. The course can be at the graduate or undergraduate level. Among eligible applicants, awards will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. If a scholarship recipient withdraws from the course before the 12th class day, the scholarship must be repaid. The Department of Dance and guest choreographer Michael Foley, in collaboration
with the Department of Music, will present a lecture demonstration on Saturday,
Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre (Room 208) in the Dance Building

The next ASSET (Association of Service and Support Employees of Texas Woman’s University) meeting will be held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 25, in Stoddard Hall 402. The TWU community extends its sympathies to the family of Dr. Wilkes
Berry, former TWU associate provost. Dr. Berry, who retired in August
2005 after 24 years of service to TWU, died Jan. 17, 2006. Services are pending.
Dr. Robert S. Martin (SLIS) recently was appointed chair of the Planning Committee of the 2006 UNESCO Commission annual meeting, to be held in Washington, D.C., in June. Dr. Martin currently serves on the Literacy Committee and is vice chair of the Education Committee of the U.S. Commission on UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
Dr. Robert S. Martin (SLIS) will be awarded a special citation by the Association of Library and Information Science Education during the association’s annual meeting, scheduled Jan. 16-19 in San Antonio.
Lewis Benavides (human resources) was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the Texas Commission of Licensing and Regulation, which oversees the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Benavides’ term will expire Feb. 1, 2011.
Faisal Aboul-Enein (nursing-Houston) has been selected to be a reviewer for the “Annals of Saudi Medicine.” This is the first time the journal has selected a nurse practitioner to review manuscripts addressing clinical medicine matters in Saudi Arabia.
