TWU Doctoral Student Receives National Honor From Adapted Physical Activity
Council
4/10/03
DENTON — Texas Woman’s University Ph.D. candidate Andrea Woodson
received the national Outstanding Student Award from the Adapted Physical Activity
Council of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and
Dance. The award, designed to acknowledge students with excellent academic credentials
and service to the community, was presented April 3 in Philadelphia, Pa.
Ms. Woodson, of Denton, is earning her Ph.D. in adapted physical education from
TWU and plans to graduate in December 2003. She plays for and serves as president
of the Lady Texans Wheelchair Basketball club and works as a volunteer at the
Bachman Recreation Center in Dallas, coaching and teaching young children with
disabilities.
Ms. Woodson aspired to play professional women’s basketball and tried
out for the Women’s National Basketball Association, but a sudden disability
made it impossible for her to realize that dream. She was asked to try out for
the USA Wheelchair Basketball Team in 2002. However, she decided to finish her
Ph.D. and plans to try out for the team after receiving her doctoral degree.
