TWU’s Ward Receives Service Award

DENTON — Dr. Susan Ward, professor of health studies at Texas Woman’s University, is the recipient of the 2003 Distinguished Service Award from Eta Sigma Gamma, the National Health Education Honorary. The award is presented to a person or persons in recognition of outstanding services to furthering the goals of the organization.

Dr. Ward began her career as a nurse but decided she wanted to help people stay healthy rather than care for them in illness. She taught health to seventh and eighth graders in Wyoming while overseeing the school district’s nurses, and later worked with various school district health promotion activities in Virginia.

After completing her Ph.D. in health education, Dr. Ward came to TWU in 1990. She has been involved in many wellness programs in the Denton community, including one for local senior citizens. She also developed a ropes course —a physically challenging program used for team and self-confidence building — at TWU.

Her current research includes evaluating breast cancer screening techniques, including a computer-assisted mammographic reader.
