TWU Hosts National Gymnastics Championships
3/18/03
DENTON The best of USA Gymnastics collegiate gymnasts
converge on Denton April 17-19 to determine who will be a
national champion. Texas Woman's University, in conjunction with
the Greater Denton Sports Commission, is hosting the national
USAG championships for the first time since 1995.
Nearly 5,000 people attended the national championships both
in 1994 and 1995 when the event was held in Denton. TWU officials
are planning for stellar attendance this spring when male and
female gymnasts from 16 teams from across the country compete in
Kitty Magee Arena.
"I am very happy to have the opportunity to welcome
student-athletes, family members and friends from all over the
country to Denton," said Chalese Connors, TWU athletics
director. "This three-day event will be a lot of fun and we
invite everyone to come be a part of the excitement."
"The mission of the Greater Denton Sports Commission is
to attract, stimulate and promote sports entertainment and
activities in the Greater Denton Area," said Steve Selby,
co-chairman of the GDSC. "Through our co-sponsorship of the
USAG championships with TWU, we are achieving all the points of
our mission."
Events get underway the afternoon of April 17 with the women's
team semifinals. The men's and women's team finals will be April
18 beginning at 1 p.m. Individual competition, both men's and
women's, starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.
Tickets are $20 for an adult event pass and $15 for a student
