DALLAS Lady Bird Johnson is one of the four million
Americans living with the effects of stroke. Every 45 seconds,
someone in the United States experiences a stroke, and stroke is
the third leading cause of death in the U.S.
Dr. Jean Ford at Texas Woman's University, director of the
Stroke Center-Dallas, can address questions from the media about
stroke, disabilities from stroke, stroke statistics and stroke
recovery. Currently, pioneering research in pharmacologic therapy
for aphasia and hemiplegia subsequent to stroke is being
conducted at the Stroke Center. Rehabilitation pharmacology pairs
drug treatment with intensive speech and/or physical therapy to
enhance recovery during the subacute recovery period following
stroke.
The Stroke Center-Dallas, established in 1992 under the name
The Aphasia Center, is dedicated to both rehabilitation, research
and training of students and professionals in the treatment of
stroke.
