TWU Opens Mega Computer Lab

TWU Opens Mega Computer Lab
6/19/02
DENTON Texas Woman's University has launched one of the
largest computer labs of its kind in North Texas. The Mega
Computer Lab, located on the second floor of the Multipurpose
Classroom and Laboratory building, consolidates several smaller
computer labs into a large, more student-friendly environment.
The lab is part of the TWU Technology Center, which also
includes a state-of-the-art video production and control facility
for the creation and management of distance education classes.
"The Technology Center offers students the benefits of
the newest technology and gives them a place to learn in an
environment that reflects the workplace," said TWU
Chancellor Dr. Ann Stuart.
The lab's 84 computer stations include the latest developments
in desktop software and hardware. Students have access to the lab
from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday-Friday. Lab hours can be
adjusted based on students' needs, added Bill Palmertree, vice
president for information services.
"We focused on students as the users when designing the
lab," said Patricia Edwards, director of instructional
support services. "The hardware and software in the lab
supports students' general and specific needs."
Along with providing students better computer access, other
uses for the Mega Computer Lab include new student orientation,
registration and special student outreach programs.
Construction on the $630,000 Technology Center began in
January and the lab opened June 3. The video production and
control facility will open in the fall.
