TWU’s ‘The Lasso’ moving to Department of English, Speech
and Foreign Language
11/10/05
DENTON — It began
in 1914 as an experimental alternative to a monthly publication,
then became the voice of Texas Woman’s University students.
Beginning in spring 2006, “The Lasso,” TWU’s student-run newspaper,
will move to the Department of English, Speech and Foreign
Languages.
“The Lasso” currently
is under the supervision of TWU’s School of Library and Information
Studies (SLIS). According to “Marking A Trail: A History of
the Texas Woman’s University,” the newspaper was under the
supervision of the Department of English when it made its
debut on Nov. 7, 1914, then moved to the journalism department
when it was established in 1925. Journalism later became the
mass communications program and was housed in SLIS. When the
program ended last summer, TWU officials discussed the newspaper’s
future.
“We wanted to support
the continuation of a strong student newspaper,” TWU Provost
Dr. Carolyn Gunning said. “We felt it important that there
continue to be an academic component, and the Department of
English, Speech and Foreign Languages seemed to be the best
fit.”
Dr. Gunning noted
that SLIS now offers only graduate programs, and there no
longer are faculty to teach journalism. Both were factors
in the decision to move “The Lasso.” Dr. Bruce Krajewski,
chair of the Department of English, Speech and Foreign Languages,
will explore the possibility of offering courses to help prepare
students for careers in the field of communications, including
journalism. He’ll also work with the paper’s adviser, Meg
Barry, a TWU graduate and former “Lasso” editor hired as a
half-time staff member.
Barry, who owns
her own desktop publishing business, worked at “The Lasso”
for two years as a TWU student, serving as managing editor
in spring and fall 2002 and as editor in spring 2003. She
sees her new role as strictly that of a consultant.
“The paper really
is run by the students,” she said. “I’m there only to make
sure it’s done properly.”
“The Lasso” is
published weekly and is distributed on TWU campuses.
