TWU To Host Third Annual Symposium On Second Language

DENTON Two nationally renowned scholars Dr.
Barbara Flores and Dr. Carmen Tafolla will be the keynote
speakers at the Third Annual Symposium on Second Language
Acquisition and Cultural Diversity, hosted by the Texas Woman's
University Office of Bilingual/English as a Second Language
Education Programs.
The symposium will be held June 22 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in
the TWU Multipurpose Classroom and Laboratory building, located
near the intersection of Bell Avenue and East College Street.
Onsite registration is $75; $35 for TWU faculty and staff, $20
for paraprofessionals and $15 for university students. For

Dr. Flores is a professor of education at California State
University in San Bernardino. A former classroom teacher of
bilingual education and ESL, she is regarded as an outstanding
scholar in the areas of language and literacy development. Her
publications include Reading in the Bilingual Classroom
and Bilingual Children's Social Construction of Literacy and
Biliteracy.
Dr. Tafolla is an internationally acclaimed poet, author and
speaker on multicultural issues. In 1999, she received the Art of
Peace Award for writing which furthers peace, justice and human
understanding.
Symposium sessions will focus on "nuts and bolts"
information that can be applied in the classroom. Session topics
include "Vocabulary Development," "Dual Language
With Two Teachers," "Dropout Prevention/Intervention
and Recovery," "Teaching Reading and Language Arts to
Linguistically Different Learners," among others. A number
of sessions will run concurrently.
