State Rep. Wong to speak at TWU’s Houston commencement

HOUSTON —
State Rep. Martha Wong will address graduates of the Texas
Woman’s University Institute of Health Sciences-Houston
Center during a commencement ceremony Sunday, Dec. 18.
The ceremony will
begin at 2 p.m. in the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center,
located at 2151 W. Holcombe Blvd. Students and family members
who have tickets are invited to attend.
Approximately 191
degrees will be conferred during the Houston commencement.
TWU’s Denton ceremonies, which include graduates from
the Denton and Dallas campuses, will take place Saturday,
Dec. 17. TWU Chancellor Dr. Ann Stuart will preside at each
ceremony.
Rep. Wong has served
State District 134 since 2003. She is vice chair of the House
Urban Affairs Committee, and is serving her second term as
vice chair of the House Rules and Resolutions Committee. Rep.
Wong also is a member of the House State Affairs Committee.
Prior to her political
career, Rep. Wong spent 20 years in Texas public school classrooms
as a teacher, principal and associate superintendent in the
Houston Independent School District. She also served for six
years on the Houston City Council.
A native Houstonian,
Rep. Wong earned her bachelor of science degree from the University
of Texas, and a master’s degree and doctorate of educational
administration degree from the University of Houston. The
Texas Association of Community Development Corporations recently
named her a “Community Champion,” an award created
to recognize statewide level advocates, supporters and leaders
for housing and economic development. The Houston Asian Junior
Chamber also presented Rep. Wong with an Award of Excellence
for her continuous commitment to the Asian community.
