TWU Theatre Presents The Dresser
2/10/03
DENTON The Texas Woman's University Theatre Department
provides a backstage look at a traveling World War II
Shakespearean troupe as it presents Ronald Harwood's The
Dresser.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Feb. 21-22 and Feb. 26 through
March 1, and at 2 p.m. Feb. 23. All performances will take place
in the Redbud Theatre, located on Bell Avenue on TWU's Denton
campus. Ticket prices range from $5 to $12. For reservations and
other information, contact the TWU Theatre Box Office at (940)
898-2020.
Dr. Mary Lou Hoyle, TWU professor of drama, will direct the
play, which is set in 1941 as Hitler's bombs are falling on
England. A traveling theatre troupe prepares to perform
Shakespeare's King Lear, despite the fact that the war has
taken all the able-bodied actors. The company's aging
actor-manager, Sir (portrayed by Dr. Tony Medlin, TWU associate
professor of drama), is nearing a mental breakdown, barely able
to remember who he is, let alone his lines. His common-law wife,
Her Ladyship (Ruth Ann Engel of Keene), wants to cancel the show,
but with a mixture of pampering and prodding, Sir's faithful
dresser, Norman (Dennis Sloan, Denton), prepares the aging
thespian for one last conquest.
Other cast members include Brendon Dennehy of Greenville;
Christina English of Sourdanton; Thomas Floyd, of Denison; Scott
Fryer and Patricia Stepkin, both of Denton; Alicia Green of
Simms; Jaymes Gregory of Haltom City; and Joshua Hancock of
Kilgore.
Crew members are Marketa Fantova, scenic design; Pem Medlin,
costume design; and Michael Scudday, lighting design.
