TWU Graduate Student Wins National Scholarship

DENTON Texas Woman's University graduate student Kelli
Connell is the first recipient of the Crystal Apple Award,
presented by the Society for Photographic Education (SPE). The
award includes a $5,000 scholarship.
Fifty-two graduate and undergraduate students from across the
country applied for the award, according to SPE. Applicants must
be full-time students majoring in photography. The recipient is
selected on the basis of his or her work submitted with the
application.
The $5,000 scholarship can be used for any educational
expenses incurred by the recipient. In addition, the recipient
receives a one-year membership to SPE and Connell's sponsoring
teacher, Susan kae Grant, professor of visual arts at TWU, will
receive a crystal apple engraved with her name.
Connell and Grant will be honored at the SPE national
conference scheduled for March 20-23 in Austin.
The Society for Photographic Education (www.spenational.org)
is a non-profit organization that provides a forum for the
discussion of photography and related media as a means of
creative expression and cultural insight. Through its programs,
SPE seeks to promote a broader understanding of the medium in all
its forms and to foster the development of its practices,
teaching, scholarship and criticism.
The Crystal Apple Award was made possible through a
