TWU Music Students To Perform Opera, Chamber Music on April 27

DENTON — Selections from Mozart's The Magic Flute, Verdi's Il Trovatore and Bellini's Norma will be among those performed by Texas Woman's University music students April 27 during a concert titled “TWU Voices with Orchestra.” The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the Margo Jones Performance Hall. Admission is free.

In addition to the operatic selections, the 40-voice TWU concert choir will perform Salut Printemps by Claude Debussy and portions of the cantata Folk Songs for Women's Voices by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Both chamber works were composed specifically for women's voices. The TWU Mixed Chamber Vocal Ensemble also will perform Gabriel Faurte's Pavanne.

The concert will feature two conductors, Susan Davenport Stewart, TWU's assistant professor of choral activities, and guest conductor Bliss Johnston Virago of Treviso, Italy. Ms. Johnston Virago has conducted and coached opera at Vancouver Opera; Australian Opera; Sao Paolo, Brazil; Decca Records, London; Casals Festival Orch, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. She has coached performances with such singers as Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavorotti and Marilyn Horne.

The concert's singers will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra composed of professional musicians from the area.
