TWU Offers Accelerated Nursing Degree Program

1/09/04

HOUSTON — Professionals wanting to make a career change into the health care field can earn a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Texas Woman’s University in as little as 13 and one-half months.

The accelerated nursing program at TWU’s Houston campus, made possible with a grant from Tenet Healthcare Foundation, will begin in May 2004 and is open to persons who already have an undergraduate or graduate degree in a field other than nursing. Twenty students will be admitted to the May class, and the deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2004.

Persons interested in applying can contact Dr. Kathryn Tart at (713) 794-2173 or ktart@mail.twu.edu, or Dr. Constance Ayers at (713) 794-2982 or cayers@mail.twu.edu.

Eligibility requirement information is available at www.twu.edu/nursing/houston.

“The accelerated program will be intense and will require more time commitment than the normal full-time student load,” Dr. Tart said. “Students will take 18 hours in both the spring and fall semesters.” An undergraduate student taking 12 hours during a semester is considered full-time.

The undergraduate accelerated nursing program at TWU, the first in the state, was created to help alleviate the state’s nursing shortage. “It increases the number of students admitted into the College of Nursing and shortens the length of time it takes them to complete the program, putting nurses in the job market much sooner,” Dr. Tart said.
