TWU student's research finds pistachios may reduce lung cancer risk

HOUSTON —A diet that incorporates a daily dose of pistachios may help reduce the risk of lung and other cancers, according to data that TWU nutrition doctoral student Ladia Hernandez presented at the recent American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference.

TWU receives Texas Higher Education Star Award —12/08/09

DENTON — Texas Woman’s University’s Partnering for Teachers program with the Dallas Independent School District has received a prestigious 2009 Texas Higher Education Star Award from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

TWU was one of six in the state to receive a Star Award, which recognizes contributions toward achieving the goals of the THECB’s Closing the Gaps program.

DENTON —The Texas Woman’s University Office of Lifelong Learning has announced the addition of three new degrees to TWU’s online roster in 2010.  The bachelor of science/bachelor of arts in criminal justice and the master of arts in drama will begin in the spring, with the master of science in nutrition beginning in fall 2010.

TWU Drama presents ‘Oedipus The King’ — 11/12/09

DENTON —The Texas Woman’s University drama program ends the semester with Sophocles’ “Oedipus The King” Nov 19-22.

TWU professor offers seminar on grief and the holidays — 11/10/09

DENTON —The holidays can be tough on those who have lost a loved one.  A traditional time of celebration may become a time to “get through” or avoid altogether.

TWU to ‘Think Pink’ for breast cancer awareness — 10/8/09

DENTON — Texas Woman’s University will “Think Pink” this October with activities geared toward breast health information and stories from breast cancer survivors.  October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

TWU faculty, staff, students and family members will share their battles with breast cancer, from diagnosis to recovery.  The stories range from that of a student whose cancer was discovered at age 18 to a TWU faculty member who has survived three bouts with the disease.  Their stories may be read by going to http://www.pioneerbh.wordpress.com.

TWU receives $300,000 work-study mentorship grant from the Coordinating Board — 10/6/09

DENTON — The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has awarded Texas Woman’s University a $300,000 grant for its G-Force student-mentorship program, which is designed to increase enrollment among first-generation college students in Texas.

These grant funds will go directly to TWU students in the form of wages earned for working in the TWU Go Centers.

DENTON — The Texas Woman’s University Office of Lifelong Learning has announced that two new business degrees will be added to TWU’s distance education roster beginning in spring 2010.

A bachelor of business administration in marketing and a bachelor of business administration in management will be offered 100 percent online, making them ideal for transfer students or those who have a job and/or a family.

DENTON — Enrollment at Texas Woman’s University is up 7.2 percent to a record 13,358 students, marking TWU’s eighth consecutive year of enrollment growth.

Two TWU students selected for national science scholarship program — 9/14/09

DENTON – Texas Woman’s University seniors Victoria Loveland and Rae Lynn McFarlin recently received $10,000 scholarships from the National Consortium of Measurement and Signals Intelligence Research (NCMR) Scholars Program.

They are among 46 students in the nation to receive the scholarships, which are awarded through the National Science Foundation.

DENTON — Dr. Yvonne Thornton, the first African-American woman in the U.S. to be board certified in high-risk obstetrics and a Pulitzer Prize nominee for her family’s biography “The Ditchdigger’s Daughters,” will serve as the keynote speaker during Texas Woman’s University’s annual “The Power of a Healthy Woman Symposium” Sept. 19.

Adult women are encouraged to attend the half-day event that shines the spotlight on women’s health. TWU receives $81,400 grant from TG for new SPRINT program — 7/21/09

DENTON — Texas Woman’s University students who are single mothers will have increased access to technology thanks to an $81,400 grant from TG, a nonprofit student loan guarantor based in Round Rock.

Recent TWU graduate selected as Fulbright Scholar — 5/29/09

DENTON – Recent Texas Woman’s University graduate Aimee Wong of Richardson will spend the next year teaching English in Taiwan as a 2009-2010 Fulbright Scholar.

Ms. Wong, who graduated from TWU in December 2007 with her bachelor’s degree in English, is one of 28 in the nation selected to the U.S. Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship program for Taiwan.

TWU student selected as Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship recipient — 5/21/09

DENTON – Texas Woman’s University student Rachel Zimmerman’s dream of improving the quality of life of those in chronic pain is closer to becoming a reality thanks to her receipt of a national Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship.

Ms. Zimmerman is one of only 48 students in the U.S. and two in Texas to receive a fellowship from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for the 2009-2010 academic year. She plans to use her $5,000 scholarship to pursue her clinical doctorate of physical therapy (DPT) at TWU’s Dallas-Presbyterian Center.

TWU Receives $330,000 estate gift for nursing education — 5/14/09

DENTON – More Texas Woman’s University graduate nursing students will receive financial assistance to become nursing faculty thanks to a $330,517 estate gift from the Austin W. Roberts Charitable Trust.

The endowment to the TWU Foundation will be used to give fellowships and scholarships to master’s or doctoral level nursing students who will eventually become nursing faculty.

DENTON – Two Texas Woman’s University students will be better prepared to become global leaders thanks to their participation in the 2009 Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders in the Caribbean.

Coordinating Board awards TWU more than $375,000 to address nursing shortage — 2/17/09

DENTON/DALLAS/HOUSTON — Texas Woman’s University — already the state’s largest educator of new nurses — will be able to graduate even more nurses to alleviate the nursing shortage thanks to a grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

TWU will use $378,167 in Professional Nursing Shortage Reduction Program grant funds from the THECB to hire additional nursing faculty and provide stipends to retain current faculty.

TWU’s Bowyer named American Occupational Therapy Association Fellow — 2/03/09

DENTON/HOUSTON — Texas Woman’s University held winter commencement exercises Dec. 13, 2008 in Pioneer Hall on the university’s Denton campus and Dec. 14, 2008 in the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

TWU to host math and science conference for middle school girls Feb. 21 — 1/26/09

DENTON — More middle school girls will be exposed to math and science careers during the “Expanding Your Horizons™ in Science and Mathematics” conference to be held at Texas Woman’s University Saturday, Feb. 21.

Young women in sixth, seventh or eighth grade are eligible to attend the conference, which runs from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on theTWU Denton campus. Gov. Perry reappoints Harry Crumpacker to TWU Board of Regents — 1/20/09

AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry has announced the reappointment of Harry L. Crumpacker II of Prosper to the Texas Woman’s University Board of Regents.

Mr. Crumpacker, whose original appointment was set to expire in February, will take over the remaining term of former regent Sharon Venable of Dallas, who resigned from the board last year. Mr. Crumpacker’s current appointment expires Feb. 1, 2011.
