TWU’s Pape named ‘Nurse of the Year in Teaching’ by national nursing magazines
DENTON — Dr. Theresa Pape, Texas Woman’s University associate professor of nursing, recently was named as the 2010 “Nurse of the Year in Teaching” by NurseWeek and Nursing Spectrum magazines.
Dr. Pape is one of six nurses in the nation to be honored by Gannett Healthcare Group, the publisher of the magazines, as part of its 2010 Nursing Excellence Awards in the categories of advancing and leading the profession, clinical care, community service, management, mentoring and teaching.
Gannett Healthcare Group is the largest print and electronic publisher of news and information for registered nurses in the U.S.
“To have one of our nursing faculty recognized by these major nursing magazines, which reach thousands of professionals nationwide, speaks to the quality and reputation of TWU’s College of Nursing,” said Dr. Patricia Holden-Huchton, dean of the TWU College of Nursing. “I know I join Dr. Pape’s colleagues in congratulating her for this prestigious honor.”
Dr. Pape serves as a model to her nursing graduate students through her continued commitment to research and advancing the nursing profession. She is known for her pioneering medication safety research, and her ideas have succeeded in reducing medication errors within healthcare systems in the U.S. and throughout the world.
“I have a passion for the nursing profession – for practice, for research and, in particular, for teaching,” Dr. Pape said. “It is both a personal and professional privilege to be recognized by my peers for my teaching efforts. Nursing students are the future of the profession, and in a sense, represent our immortality in that our values may live on in them.”
The Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future is the national sponsor of the 2010 Nursing Spectrum Nursing Excellence Awards. In recognition of this support, Gannett Healthcare Group donated $5,000 in Dr. Pape’s name to the Johnson & Johnson’s faculty scholarship fund, which is administered by the Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association.
