TWU Drama presents 'Pinnochio'


DENTON — The Texas Woman’s University drama program will present its second summer of Children’s Theater with Johnny Simons’ “Pinocchio” opening Thursday, June 16.

The show will run June 16-19 and 23-26. Performances are scheduled as follows: 1 p.m. Thursday, June 16; 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday, June 17; 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, June 18; 2 p.m. Sunday, June 19; 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday, June 23 and 24; 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, June 25; and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 26.

All performances will take place in the Redbud Theater Complex, located on the northwest side of historic Hubbard Hall on TWU’s Denton campus. The running time is 50 minutes. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, children and seniors. Reservations are strongly recommended. The show is a Commedia dell’Arte adaptation of the classic children’s tale by Carlo Collodi. The 16th century Italian commedia style is known for its creative use of props and repeated bits of physical comedy. Written by Johnny Simons of Hip Pocket Theatre, this Harlequinade version was one of his theatre’s most successful productions.

The TWU production, directed by Cristin Thomas, will feature handmade leather masks designed by Newman’s Commedia Mask Company. The show also will feature costumes designed by Marshall Warren, a set designed by Nick Irion and painted by DeeDee Tapp, and lights designed by Andy Cruz.

The cast features Stanton Brasher as Geppetto, Caleb Creel as the Wicked Puppet Master, Jacob Drum as the Donkey and a Fool, Bethany Dunn as the Spirit, Cassie Henderson as Pinocchio, Drew Maggs as the Fox, Jennie Lynn Patten as the Cricket, and Matthew Schipper as the Cat. Ashley Head serves as stage manager.
