Two prominent exercise and nutrition experts to speak during TWU Academic Day Oct. 7


DENTON — Two nationally known experts in exercise and nutrition are the featured speakers during a Texas Woman’s University’s Academic Day on Friday, Oct. 7. The academic day, which is underwritten by the Office of the Chancellor and President, is being held in honor of the Sept. 30 grand opening of the TWU Fitness and Recreation Center.

“Exercise and Nutrition: Myths vs. Science,” features Dr. Catherine Jankowski, assistant research professor at the University of Colorado in Denver, and Roberta Anding, director of the sports nutrition section of adolescent medicine and sports medicine at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

An interactive lecture on the myths of exercise and nutrition is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon in the auditorium of the Multipurpose Classroom and Laboratory (MCL) Building. A panel discussion on the science of exercise and nutrition concludes the day’s activities from 2 to 3 p.m. in room 203 of Pioneer Hall. For a map of campus, visit

Dr. Jankowski has been a teacher and researcher at the University of Colorado in Denver for more than 11 years, where she conducts research in the biology of aging muscle and exercise interventions to enhance the quality of life for older adults. She is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a past chair of the organization’s Cancer Interest Group. She also has published extensively, including articles in the science journal Metabolism, the Journal of Applied Physiology and Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly. Dr. Jankowski received her Ph.D. in kinesiology from TWU in 1996 and was an assistant professor in the TWU Department of Kinesiology for three years.

Roberta H. Anding is a clinical dietitian, diabetes educator and sports dietitian for the Houston Texans of the National Football League. She has received numerous awards and accolades, including the Texas Distinguished Dietitian Award, the Texas Dietetic Association Media Award, the John P. McGovern Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award from the University of Houston School of Nursing and the Houston Area Dietetic Association's Texas Distinguished Dietitian of the Year award several years running. Her work also has appeared in scientific and medical publications, including Pediatrics, the Journal of Adolescent Health and Critical Care Nursing.
