TWU hosts “Salute to Veterans” Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. in Denton
TWU to honor veterans by dedicating a flagpole in their honor; event also includes an interactive panel focusing on transitioning from soldier to student
WHAT: Texas Woman’s University will commemorate Veterans Day with its annual “Salute to Veterans” ceremonies Nov. 11.
Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs, the Woodrow Wilson Elementary Honor Choir, Guyer High School’s Color Guard and a representative from Congressman Michael Burgess’ office will be on hand to dedicate the new flagpole on TWU’s Denton campus in honor of U.S. veterans.
After the dedication, TWU will present an interactive panel on “Transitioning from Soldier to Student: The Road Back Home,” moderated by Dr. Karen Petty, TWU family sciences professor. TWU student veterans Fred Hinton, Taylor Williamson, Charles Goolsby, Rainy Sor and Kim Strachan will discuss how they have adjusted to civilian and student life since serving in the military.
Additional activities on the Hubbard Oval will follow the panel.
WHEN: The flagpole ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, followed by the panel at 11:15 a.m.
WHERE: The flagpole dedication ceremony will take place at the Hubbard Oval located on Administration Drive on the TWU Denton campus. The panel will be in the Southeast Ballroom of Hubbard Hall in Denton. For a map of the campus, visit www.twu.edu/maps.asp.
DETAILS: TWU’s Veterans Day activities also include:
• The TWU student organizations Helping Hands will make “Welcome Home” banners and Kappa of Texas will assemble care packages for troops;
• The TWU Student Veterans Association will allow attendees to try on military “full packs,” eat meal rations and ask attendees to make and sign cards for veterans;
• A bootcamp workout where participants will test their strength and endurance at stations and win prizes; and
• Veterans play at the student rate all day at the TWU Golf Course
