DENTON — The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) has selected Patricia Nunn, director of the Texas Woman’s University Dental Hygiene Program, as one of 10 recipients of a William J. Gies Award for Vision, Innovation and Achievement.
“The Gies Award is like the Academy Award of dental education,” said Ms. Nunn. “I am thrilled to be the first dental hygiene educator to win this award, which shows how important dental hygiene education has become to the dentistry profession.”
Named after dental education pioneer William J. Gies, Ph.D., the Gies Awards honor individuals and organizations that exemplify dedication to the highest standards of vision, innovation and achievement in global oral health and dental education, research and leadership. Ms. Nunn, whose award is for “outstanding vision — dental educator,” will receive her Gies Award during the 2010 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition to be held Feb. 27-March 3 in Washington, D.C.
“Having Ms. Nunn selected for this prestigious honor reflects the quality of TWU’s Dental Hygiene Program and its national reputation of being one of the best dental hygiene programs in the country,” said Dr. Jimmy Ishee, dean of the TWU College of Health Sciences.
Prior to becoming the director of the TWU Dental Hygiene Program in 2009, Ms. Nunn served as the dean of dental hygiene for Utah College and as the chair of the University of Oklahoma’s Department of Dental Hygiene. Ms. Nunn received her associate’s degree in dental hygiene from Coastal Bend College, her bachelor’s degree from Texas State University and her master’s degree from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi.
The ADEAGies Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Dental Education Association, presents the Gies Awards. ADEA members include all U.S. and Canadian dental schools and many allied and postdoctoral dental education programs, corporations, faculty and students. For more information, visit www.adea.org.
