TWU launches nation's first online degree honor society

3/16/10

DENTON — Texas Woman’s University is launching Epsilon Omega Epsilon (EOE) — the nation’s first honor society exclusively for students pursuing a degree through online education.

“With the increase of students enrolled in distance education programs, it is important that we honor the academic excellence, dedication and perseverance involved in seeking a degree through an online program,” said Dr. Richard Nicholas, TWU vice president for student life. “Our aim is to be the founding institution of the nation’s first honor society exclusively for online students.”

As the inaugural EOE institution, TWU has set the goal that EOE will have 10 chapters associated with institutions from at least two regions of the country in five years, which is required to apply for affiliation with the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS). TWU plans to apply for ACHS affiliation in 2015.

For more information or to apply to become a member of EOE, visit www.twu.edu/eoe.

On March 1, TWU sent letters to qualified students enrolled in one of the university’s 26 online or distance education programs. An online induction ceremony of the EOE society’s first members will be held in April. Dues for the organization are $30, which will in part help support future scholarships for members.

TWU online or distance education programs are programs in which more than 50 percent of the instruction is delivered via the Internet, satellite, compressed video or other electronic means. TWU online and distance education courses and programs are subject to the same academic standards as those offered on campus.
