DENTON – Recent Texas Woman’s University graduate
Aimee Wong of Richardson will spend the next year teaching
English in Taiwan as a 2009-2010 Fulbright Scholar.
Ms. Wong, who graduated
from TWU in December 2007 with her bachelor’s degree
in English, is one of 28 in the nation selected to the U.S.
Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship program for Taiwan.
“Personally,
I couldn’t dream of a better program to immerse myself
in another culture and further develop my Mandarin language
skills,” Ms. Wong said. “I look forward to representing
my country and to fostering cross-cultural understanding between
Taiwan and the U.S.”
As a TWU student,
Ms. Wong was an Honors Scholar, a member of the national Phi
Kappa Phi honor society and served as editor of the Lasso,
the TWU student newspaper. She also was a contributor to Off
the Quill, the TWU Honors Scholar’s research journal,
where her primary research interest was in Asian-American
women writers.
Ms. Wong plans
to attend graduate school after completing her Fulbright travel.
Sponsored by the
U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Program is the largest
U.S. international exchange program. Its goal is to increase
mutual understanding between the people of the United States
and the people of other countries. During the past 63 years,
the program has provided almost 300,000 participants —
chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential —
with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research,
exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared
international concerns.
