TWU’s Veterans Day event to focus on women in the military
11/04/09
November 4, 2009 - DENTON — Texas Woman’s University
— the nation’s largest university primarily for
women — will commemorate Veterans Day by focusing on
women in the military, both past and present.
TWU’s
“Salute to Veterans” will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday,
Nov. 11, in the Southeast Ballroom of Hubbard Hall, located
on Administration Drive on the Denton campus. For a map of
the campus, visit www.twu.edu/maps.asp. The event is free
and open to the public.
The
event features an interactive panel led by Dr. Katherine Landdeck,
TWU associate professor of history and leader of TWU’s
American Democracy Project Civic Agency Initiative. Current
TWU students Kim Strachan, a U.S. Marine Corp reservist, and
Kat Sokolova, member of the U.S. Air Force, will join TWU
alumna Michelle Ferrell, a recently retired 20-year veteran
of the U.S. Air Force, and speak about what its like to be
a woman in the military.
Dr.
Landdeck also will give a historical perspective on women
in the military including the WASPs (Women Air Force Service
Pilots), who were the first women to fly in combat in U.S.
history. The TWU Blagg-Huey Library holds the WASP archives
and will have an exhibit on women in the military Nov. 11.
Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs is scheduled to speak at the event,
and the honor choir from Denton’s Woodrow Wilson Elementary
School will perform patriotic songs.
The event also includes:
• The TWU student organizations Helping Hands will make
“Welcome Home” banners and Kappa of Texas will
assemble care packages for troops;
• The TWU Student Veterans Association will distribute
backpacks and ask attendees to make and sign cards for veterans;
• The U.S. 2010 Census Bureau will distribute information
on the census;
• A bootcamp workout where participants will run around
campus chanting traditional military cadences; and
• The TWU Athletic Department will salute veterans during
the TWU basketball game at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Hall.
