AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry has announced his appointment
of Rae Lynn McFarlin of Bonham as the new student regent for
Texas Woman’s University. She will serve a one-year
term expiring May 31, 2010.
“I join the
board in welcoming Rae Lynn as our new student regent,”
TWU Chancellor Ann Stuart said. “I know that she will
serve our students’ needs well and do an excellent job
representing her peers.”
Ms. McFarlin, 21,
is a senior mathematics and chemistry major at the TWU Denton
campus. She is a tutor and student assistant in the TWU Science
Learning Resource Center and for the TWU Math and Computer
Science Department. She also is past president and current
vice president of the TWU chapter of the national mathematics
honor society Kappa Mu Epsilon, a member of the TWU Honors
Scholar Program, the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the TWU
Leadership Institute. She is a recipient of the National Science
Foundation’s S-STEM (Scholarships for Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math) Scholarship and the Harlan C. Miller
Memorial Scholarship for math majors.
“As the student
voice on the board, I hope to build on my predecessors’
legacy of making the student regent more visible on all campuses,”
Ms. McFarlin said. “I want to create new ways to interact
with students, so that they know more about the Board of Regents
and how the board’s decisions affect them. I also look
forward to letting the regents know the wonderful things that
TWU students are doing.”
Ms. McFarlin replaces
former student regent Scarlett Pope of Grapevine, whose term
expired last month. She will attend her first board meeting
as the TWU student regent on June 5 at TWU’s Dallas-Presbyterian
campus.
In 2005, Gov. Perry
signed legislation mandating that each public university board
of regents include one student member. Student regents have
the same powers and duties as the other members of the board,
with the exceptions of voting and being counted to determine
a quorum.
